Every year, people across the U.S. devote the third Monday in January to giving back to their communities. The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is a national holiday that honors the beloved civil rights leader.

Here are five local and safe ways you can participate on the day of service or throughout the month.

Be a “snow angel.” Shovel a neighbor’s sidewalk or driveway, or clean the snow off their car windshield.

Offer to walk the dog of a sick or elderly person whom you know.

Pick up litter in your neighborhood or a local park. Go plogging.

It can be hard for wildlife to find water, especially when the temperature drops to freezing. Provide fresh water for birds and small animals by placing a shallow dish of water in a sunny spot in your backyard or apartment balcony.

Brighten someone’s day with an outdoor art project. Make a cheerful poster you can hang in your window or post in your neighborhood. Draw a cheerful picture with a positive message in chalk on the sidewalk or driveway where you live.
