As the season changes from spring to summer where you live, what differences do you notice outside?

Head outside and look for clues that summer is here. No matter where you live, you’re sure to find signs of summer throughout if you look carefully.

SEARCH:

Look for trees and shrubs full of leaves and fruits. Now that summer has begun, the leaves that were just starting to sprout, and the budding flowers of spring are now lush with green leaves and fresh fruits. See a special tree you love? Adopt a tree and come back to see how it grows and changes.

COUNT:

How many young animals do you see following their parents around? Do you see any ducklings, bunnies, fawns, or other young animals? Many of the animals born in spring are now out and about!

LOCATE:

Find pollinators like bees, birds, bats, butterflies, and moths visiting flowers that are now fully in bloom. What other creatures are now out and about in the summer sun? Mosquitos? Crickets and grasshoppers? Go on a Pollinator Patrol and see what you find!

IDENTIFY:

How many different types of birds do you see? Check out Let’s Go Birding for ways to identify different types of birds. Notice their colors and markings, and what kinds of behaviors they display. Do you recognize their songs?

LISTEN:

Notice the sounds of people outdoors, birds singing, bees buzzing,  grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids chirping.
